"WILLIAM HARTNELL, is in my view, the yardstick by which all other Doctors are judged."

One of the great benefits that filming Doctor Who conventions can bring is, on occasion, an irreplaceable moment in history.

This MYTH MAKERS special features the late DOUGLAS CAMFIELD at the Doctor Who Appreciation Socierty's PanoptiCon 5, held at the Grand Metropolitan Hotel, Brimnigham in 1982.

Interviewed by IAN McLACHLAN, DOUGLAS gives a unique and fascinating interview about the way he directs and his experiences working on DOCTOR WHO.

A bonus interview features the very first convention appearance of Sophie Aldred at PanoptiCon 8...where she talks about having just landed the role of ACE!

  • Sophie Aldred's very first Convention appearance at Panopticon 8.

  • Douglas Camfield Biography.

The DVD starts off with an apology from Nicholas Briggs for the picture and sound quality - an apology that after watching the DVD is not necessary.

Although the footage of the interview is by no means up to today's standards, it's the quality of the interview itself that makes this DVD worth buying.

The setting is the DWAS Panopticon 5 convention, held at the Grand Metropol Hotel in Birmingham in 1982. As the VT rolls, we are treated to a window on this rare interview with Douglas Camfield. Ian McLaughlin is the interviewer, and has that perfect mix of being invisible yet visible, which only good interviewers actually have the hang of.

Without giving too much away, there are some great moments where Douglas opens up the floor for audience members to ask his memories on particular episodes that he directed. One of the memories was for Invasion, where Douglas recalls the story having had a number of re-writes.

It's also worth checking out to see why Douglas thought that Ian and Barbara were too old, and on killing companions, why he had 'companions to spare'.

Overall a great little package, perfectly rounded off by a bonus interview with Sophie Aldred at her very first Convention appearance at Panopticon 8, where she talks about having just landed the role of Ace.
