Exiled to Earth in the late 20th Century by his own people - the Time Lords - the newly regenerated Doctor arrives in Oxley Woods alongside a shower of mysterious meteorites.

Investigating these unusual occurrances is the newly-formed United Nations Intelligence Taskfoce - UNIT for short.

Led by Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, UNIT are soon called into action when people and meteorites start going missing. Most puzzling of all is the attempted kidnapping of a strange hospital patient - a man with two hearts, who insists that he knows the Brigadier...

The new Doctor soon joins forces with his old friend, UNIT and the recently recruited Dr Liz Shaw, but time is running out...

Irregular things are happening at a nearby plastics factory, while faceless creatures lurk in the woods. The Nestenes have arrived, and want to conquer the Earth...

All i can hear is this strange buzzing sound and then this thing appears out of the woods...it stands before me on two legs, but it isn't Human and there's no one else around and nowhere to run.

A really creepy story to get the third Doctor's era underway!

Like all good horror, "Spearhead From Space" touches on those deep seated fears that something horrible lurks in the nearby woods...a terrible mass of evil in the enchanted forest.  It's that slightly uneasy feeling one gets while walking home on a foggy evening...it's the Wicked Witch, the Vampire...or the Nestene Consciousness.

Nothing is ever overdone in this story, which adds to it's appeal and the fact that it was filmed entirely on location provides a sense of reality.  The Autons are memorable, but it's the ideas behind and beyond what we see on screen that make for a classic Dr. Who story.

In my opinion this is a classic story and one of the best of the Pertwee era.

'We deal with the odd... the unexplained. Anything on Earth... or beyond.' – The Brigadier

The Doctor in his new body lands on the planet Earth. He finds out that he cannot leave Earth because he is an exile. When a man gets fired from his work place, and then gets chased by shop manikins, The Doctor soon realises that he is facing the Autons and the Nestene’s. He also finds out that the invasion of Earth will begin when plastic kills people.

I have written this review five days before the new series starts. The day is 21st March 2005. On the 26th March, episode 1 of the new series will start. I could not think of a better episode than ‘Spearhead From Space’, only because this is an Auton story, and episode 1 of the new series is an Auton episode. Well I could have written the very first episode of ‘Doctor Who’ just to get it right, the Doctor is only called Doctor. Not Doctor Who. The Who bit means the mystery.

No-one knew more about writing Doctor Who, than Robert Holmes. He is, and always will be the best writer for ‘Doctor Who’. His script for this story is one of the best
scripts he has ever done. He has written and done the third Doctor well. Many of the actors gave this story their best effort. More Jon Pertwee. His first story is one of his best stories.

I like the look of the Autons. Except you can see that it is just a mask put over a face. The music makes this story work well.
