DWO Interview: Dave Tremont

DWO Interview: Dave Tremont
News Dated: 30/4/2008

DWO recently interviewed Weta's Senior Workshop Artist about the new Doctor Who range.

How did you get into the world of Model Making?

"Simply, Thunderbirds and my father. Thunderbirds totally captured my imagination, as a child, and has stayed with me ever since. I was always aware that I was looking at models and would try to recreate them with whatever was at hand... usually Lego.

My father often built, us kids, wooden toys from scratch and I loved watching him do it. When he built me the Thunderbirds from solid blocks of wood, it all clicked and I have been building models ever since."

How long have you been a fan of Doctor Who?

"Ever since it started, yep!.. all ten Doctors have been my Doctor and this also relates to question 1 as part of the inspiration that got me into this business. Doctor Who had a magic and creativeness about it that allowed me to imagine and dream (not just the nightmares).

Even for its low budget it allowed me to be inspired and lost in the stories enough to not see the wooden sets and seams down the backdrops. There was a great deal of television, at that time, that inspired a generation of special effects technicians (me included) with Thunderbirds and Doctor Who at the top.

A great deal of that inspiration disappeared from our screens, until now with the new series which I am enjoying even more than I ever did... One is never too old to be inspired."

DWM Issue #395 - cover & details
News Dated: 29/4/2008

DWO have received the cover & details for DWM Issue #395:

Doctor Who Magazine - Issue #395
Panini Magazines Trade Release

IT’S ALL OUT WAR IN DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE 395!

David Tennant and the cast of the latest Doctor Who adventure discuss the war-loving, potato-headed, baddies in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine...

“Sontarans are great,” beams David, while sitting on a deck chair, and watching a troop of Sontarans march across the Doctor Who set. “I think that’s partly because they come from a very specific world. That back story gives them a great context. Robert Holmes didn’t just create a race, back in the 1970s: he created a world that they came from. Even if you never saw that planet, you understood why they did what they did.”

Also this issue:

An exclusive interview with Georgia Moffett on what it’s like being the Doctor’s Daughter.

Previews of the next four episodes of Series Four – The Doctor’s Daughter, The Unicorn and the Wasp and Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead – featuring new and previously unpublished photos!

Russell T Davies reveals all about Partners in Crime’s top secret scene in Production Notes.

There’s a crisis in the Caribbean as Donna makes her comic strip début in Part One of The Widow’s Curse.

DWM visits Rome and reveals the true story of how a disaster was created, in an exclusive report on the making of The Fires of Pompeii – featuring interviews with actor Francois Pandolfo and writer James Moran.

Rose returns? Missing planets?! Vanishing bees?!? What can it all mean? We look at the clues...

What are Ood, but a reflection of ourselves? Find out as we go behind-the-scenes on the Ood-sphere and talk to the cast and crew of Planet of the Ood, including Keith Temple, Tim McInnerny, Paul Kasey and Adrian Rawlins.

Actress Louise Jameson tells what it was really like to work with Tom Baker in Doctor Who...

The Time Team discover if Karfel is really as awful as its reputation, as they watch Timelash.

PLUS all the latest news, exclusive photos, reviews, previews, competitions and even more!

DWM #395 goes on sale at newsagents from Thursday 1st May priced £3.99.

Anthony Head keen to return

Anthony Head keen to return
News Dated: 29/4/2008

Speaking to Digital Spy, Anthony Head discusses his ambition for a return to Doctor Who.

Are there any plans to resurrect your Doctor Who villain Mr Finch?
"Apparently not – and I'm not sure why! I think he should come back. He was good fun. There is a school of thought that he's dead, but you don't see him die. Who knows? I'm very fond of him and it was such good fun working with Mr Tennant. He's a lovely actor. So if they ask me I'd say 'yes' in a flash."

They say 'never work with children or animals', so where does K-9 fit into that?
"In both categories! I've worked with more responsive actors. After all this time, they might have worked out one or two more means of propulsion. He was quite slow off the mark and not always terribly consistent. But beyond that I know he's a lot of people's favourite, so I'm not going to diss him!"

Radio Times - Freema interview
News Dated: 29/4/2008

This week's Radio Times includes an interview with Freema Agyeman.

Now, hands up who thought sparks would fly between Martha and Donna (Catherine Tate).

“Too obvious!” laughs Agyeman. “Everyone was expecting that, so it’s brilliant to have wrong-footed them. Martha and Donna are both too grounded to start swinging their handbags at each other. I’m glad that they didn’t. Instead, the two of them banter and gang up on the Doct or. It’s got great comedy value.”

Was she able to keep a straight face opposite the Sontarans?

“Tiny little warriors who look like potatoes,” she considers. “Well, they look cute, but they’re totally obsessed with war and bloodlust and death and honour. I think they’re suffering a bit from small-man syndrome."

“I did get a text from Russell T Davies just before we started filming that said ‘This is the first time ever that you’ll tower over a baddie!’ ” That can’t have helped. “No, but it was funny. When they walked on set, I did have a bit of a giggle.”

This week's copy comes with the second part of The Resurrection Casket FREE Audiobook.

Radio Times is out today, priced £1.00.
