Torchwood Scores record audience

News Dated: 23/10/2006

The opening episodes of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood drew the largest digital channel audience for a non-sport programme, says the BBC.

The first two instalments of the series, starring John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, also attracted BBC Three's largest ever audience.

The 2100 BST episode had 2.4 million viewers and a 12.7% audience share, the 2145 BST one had 2.3 million (13.8%).

Two football matches in 2004 and 2005 earned larger digital TV audiences.

BBC Three controller Julian Bellamy said the audience figures for the new sci-fi series were an "incredible achievement".

"I'm delighted that last night's Torchwood was such a big hit," he said.

The series follows a team of investigators solving alien and human crime and is aimed at an adult audience.

It has been written by Russell T Davies, who scripted the comeback series of Doctor Who as well as earlier hits including Queer as Folk and Bob & Rose.

Torchwood is set in Cardiff and also stars Welsh actress Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper.

The first two episodes will be repeated on BBC Two on Wednesday.

News Dated: 1/9/2006

Just like with Doctor Who, as we get closer to transmission, various airdates are being banded about. Anything from September 23rd to October 28th. TWO have also been given a date, which we believe to be accurate - Sunday 22nd October. We would like to stress that nothing is official until the BBC state so.

As for the airtime, that is currently scheduled for a 9pm start.

     Set Reports

Set Report - Simon Watkins - Wednesday 6th September 2006

News Updated: 6/9/2006

Location: The Hayes; Cardiff

Time: 12:00am - 1:30am

While out last night in Cardiff and rushing back to the station to catch my last train. We approaced The Hayes and noticed a lot of people, trucks and lights. "Got to be Torchwood!" we thought.

Turned out they were filming right outside the Church at the Hayes, not 10 yards from The Runaway Bride location. I'm surprised that Torchwood isn't firmly "in the can" by now. It can't be long until it airs.

Anyway, got to see John Barrowman and Eva Myles. Barrowman was wearing his RAF serviceman get-up, and when we arrived, it looked like he was having a bit of a heated debate about something with one of the other cast or crew. However, I was more interested in checking out the camera and finally confirming that it was HD (a Sony HD 750).

The scene was outide that pub next door to O'Neils, can't remember its name (used to be Le Cafe Francais), and had the cast and extras sat outdoors sipping drinks and chatting.

I saw a few shots of people running around. Some of the shots were action orientated and some of the others concentrated on dialogue.

We were allowed to get pretty close and it was easy to hear everything that was said. Lots of swearing (F work almost every other word); it's clear that this production is a very different animal from Who.

I got to speak to the camermen who allowed me to get a really close look at the Sony 750 HD camera they were using which was set up on rails.

They were very friendly and poilte, especially considerining I'd 'had a few', so to speak, what with the camera being so expensive, and not knowing me from Adam.

I also saw one of the alien creatures up close, and even spoke to him. I commented on the fact that the mask was excellent, and two of the crew replied with "thank you", it turned out that they had been partially responsible for its design.

I hung around watching the filming long enough to miss my last train, and have to pay 30 quid for a taxi home (the things I do for you lot!).

I'm afraid the pics I took were just from my mobile phone, and it was dark, so don't expect much.

The crew (you can make out John Barrowman in the background wearing his RAF gear).
